Macarella
Platja de Macarella is situated at 14 kilometres from Ciutadella, located between es Castellet de Macarella and Punta de na Xulla, it belongs to the Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès of the south coast of Ciutadella, and it is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Menorca. It is a virgin and isolated u-shaped cove, not very big, surrounded by high cliffs, covered by thick pine trees, there is a wetland inhabited by eels and sea turtles, a canyon, a stretch of the Camí de Cavalls located at the rear, which gives a quite wild aspect; the beach is sandy, there is crystal clear water, the slope is gentle, the swell very moderate and it is not very crowded by local visitors and tourists. It is the typical menorcan landscape. The coast gets higher, becomes steep and inaccessible, except at the sea inlets which are normally also the mouth of a torrent or a canyon, with beautiful bathing areas and excellent shelters in the sea. The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are good on a sandy ground, although it is open to the winds from the southwest-south and you have to approach the coast carefully because of the rocks. In the nearby and more sheltered Cala Macarelleta there are signs and you can anchor on the eastern side, on a sandy ground with a depth of four metres. The accessibility by car is easy following the signs and the deviations. The private car can be left on a free parking area at one kilometre from this coastal stretch. When the beach has a lifeguard service, you must follow the lifeguards’ instructions and the warnings on flags. A red flag indicates dangerous swimming conditions and means that swimming is not permitted. A yellow flag indicates that precaution must be taken, but that swimming is permitted. A green flag indicates that swimming is permitted. An orange flag is used to indicate that the lifeguard is absent. Act cautiously when no lifeguard is present or the service is not available and enjoy the beach without taking any unnecessary risks. For health and safety reasons, the municipal ordinances ban pets on beaches. Information about this beach may change.
